Summary
Spangled Cotingas are found throughout the tropical rainforest of the Amazon Basin. Males and females have very different colouration. The males are a bright, showy turquoise and black with a deep plum-coloured throat while the females are a much duller brown-grey.
This specimen is a male. It was purchased by the Museum from the famous British ornithologist and bird artist, John Gould (1804-1881) somewhere between 1858 and 1868. Its exact origin or date of collection is unknown.
Though Spangled Cotinga are thought to be uncommon they have an extremely large range and are therefore classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as being of Least Concern.
