Designed for Bruce Woodley, member of the famous singing group The Seekers, the Woodley House is the beach house par excellence. A two storey timber structure clad in vertical cedar boards, this house was designed for a 360 degree outlook over dense foliage to Port Philip Bay on one side and the ocean on the other. The walls of the upper living area are devoted almost entirely to large areas of sliding plate glass. These windows open onto generous living decks which virtually double the living and dining spaces of the first floor. The Woodley House represents the investigation of the house as sculptural object, and was one of the first in the 1970s to rigorously pursue such an idea. Space and form are moulded by the architect to create an abstract form.
