The firm Crocker & Hamilton, Drapers, were in business from at least 1854, when their Hindley Street store was listed in the Royal South Australian Almanac and General Directory. The following year they were listed as having an additional store in North Parade, Port Adelaide.

In Howell's Adelaide Directory for 1858, the same business addresses were listed, with the additional detail that the city store was at number 78 Hindley Street (Howell was also a token issuer. See records for Howell, John). The partnership must have been dissolved between the time Howell collected the listings for his directory and July of that year as during that month advertisements appeared in the Adelaide Advertiser informing the public that Crocker & Co. were 'SELLING OFF, SELLING OFF. - Crocker & Co. beg to inform the public of South Australia that they have determined on relinquishing the DRAPERY TRADE. In consequence of which they intend to SELL OFF the whole of their well-selected and extensive stock of Drapery Milinery Clothing Boots and Shoes &c. &c. &c. which will be sold to the public at a great sacrifice.' The sale was scheduled to start at 10 am on Thursday 22 July. The advertisement also included a notice that the shop, warehouse and dwelling were available to let. (Advertiser, 21 July 1858, p.1.)

These advertisements continued until September 1858, indicating that the public had not cleared the stock of Crocker & Co. at any great pace.

There were no listings for Crocker & Hamilton in following years, and Crocker himself seems to have either retired from business or left Adelaide. Between 1864 and 1867 there were advertisements for Hamilton, William, Clothier of North Parade, Port Adelaide. He was not listed Adelaide directories for 1870.

Crocker and Hamilton issued tokens twice. The positively dated issue was in 1857 (date given on tokens). The Museum Victoria EMu catalogue gives an approximate date of circa 1855 for the other issue, as it mentions stores in two locations, Adelaide and Port Adelaide. The 1857 tokens mentioned an additional store in Burra Burra. No information about the Burra Burra store has been located as of the time of writing.
