J.H. Knipe was a businessman and developer in the Mentone area in the 1880s. He initially called the area 'Dover Slopes'. Knipe was also an an estate agent and councillor around the 1850s, in what later became Surrey Hills, and he coined the latter name.

Knipe was also busy in other areas. He was named as a councillor for Prahran 1866-69, and a John Knipe is named as the land speculator who named Clifton Hill.
