Summary

Leather-bound presentation album containing 51 monochrome gold-toned photographs by Ludovico Hart of exterior and interior views of the Melbourne International Exhibition, held at the Exhibition Building between 1 October 1880 - 30 April 1881.

This album was presented to Mrs LL Smith (Marion Jane Higgins) on her wedding day, 15 May 1883, by John Hanlon Knipe. John Hanlon Knipe, a member of the Manufacturer's Association, was the 'self-proclaimed' originator of the idea for an International Exhibition in Melbourne. Marion Jane Higgins was Dr Louis Lawrence Smith's second wife. Smith, a well known entrepreneurial medical practitioner and politician, was the first Trustee of the Exhibition Building.

Physical Description

Red leather covered photograph album with decorative gold tooled border and gold tooled lettering in centre of front cover. Inside, 51 monochrome, gold toned photographic plates showing exterior and interior views of the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition, held at the Exhibition Building. Each photograph is mounted on heavy buff coloured card and has a simple black line border with a title beneath the photograph. The first page contains a photographic portrait of John Hanlon Knipe and a hand written inscription.
