James Anderson became a professional elocutionist after winning a gold fob medal for elocution at the Austral Competition, Bendigo, in 1904, and winning another medal for elocution at the South Street Competition, Ballarat, in 1905. He married another elocutionist, Gertrude Lewis, and they lived and taught elocution in Adelaide. Their granddaughter is Margaret Anderson, who from 2002 was Director of the History Trust of South Australia. Copies of recital programs and of an Anderson family concert party 1924 photo album, supplied by donor Rae Anderson (originals now held by Margaret Anderson), are held by the Museum Victoria History and Technology Department.
