The Macleay River district is located 428 kilometres north of Sydney. Agricultural activities since settlement have included beef, dairying, timber, maize, potatoes, bananas, fishing, prawning, oysters, deer and avocadoes.

Around 1880 the Macleay River Agricultural Association awarded a silver first prize medal to W. Kerrigan for a Rat Terrier dog named Nap. The medal was designed by Ernst August Altmann. In 1882 the Association awarded a 9-carat gold medal, also designed by Altman, to P. H Morton for a 'First Prize Hackney'. Agricultural associations such as this provided important support to local farmers by encouraging the improvement of skills and adoption of new practices and equipment through regular shows and competitions.
