Introduced in the USA in 1940, the W6 was one of the new line of Raymond Loewy 'styled' tractors. The W6 was a medium size available in petrol and diesel (WD6) models and was mechanically similar to the Farmall M but not designed for row-crop work. In Australia, the first W6 was imported and tested in May 1947. In September 1948, the W6 and the Farmall M became the first IHC tractors to be built locally when production began at the firm's Geelong factory. Production of the W6 & Farmall M continued at Geelong until early 1951 when about 4900 had been built. They were replaced in production by AW6 and Farmall AM models.
