International Harvester released the D Series line of motor trucks for the US market in April 1937, superseding the C Series. The D Series introduced an all-steel cabin with more streamlined styling echoing the trend in motor car design of the period. The new model was available in Australia by August 1937 in sizes ranging from a half-ton D2 utility to the 4 ton D40 truck. A forward control D300 model was also available. Many D Series utilities and trucks were supplied to Australian armed forces between 1939 and 1941 including custom bodied ambulances for the Royal Australian Air Force. Some were modified to use the International GL-300 gas producer unit. In Australia the D Series was replaced by the K Series in about September 1941.
