Mechanical pencils. Three early types of continuous writing devices. Circa 1880.
The lead is held in a tube which retracts into the outer cylinder. The retraction is a sliding motion and not a rotary one as in later types.
Physical Description
Three metal mechanical pencils. Each pencil lead is held within a narrow inner tube which retracts into an outer tube through either sliding action. The pencils all differ slightly but are all cylindrical with simple decorative markings. The largest pencil has a small threaded cap on one end, and two pencil leads are held in hollow at the end of this pencil. The smallest pencil has a small ring attached at one end. The medium sized pencil also has a small ring attached at one end, as well as a central band of smooth metal with a slot along one side revealing the inner tube.
