Summary
Comprehensive instruction book for owners of the second series McKay Auto Header Harvesters, equipped with the Wisconsin engine, and manufactured from 1929. During the North American summers of 1928 an 1929, the H.V. McKay exported several of its Auto Headers for trial by farmers in the United States and Canada. The result of the trials was so successful that subsequently the firm received an order from the Waterloo Manufacturing Co., of Ontario, Canada, to export a 'large number' of Auto Headers from the Sunshine Harvester Works to Canada in time for the harvest season in mid-1930. In October 1929, H.V. McKay Pty Ltd signed a partnership with the Waterloo Manufacturing Co. to form a joint venture to manufacture and market the Sunshine Auto Header for North American markets. Headlie Taylor turned the first sod in the construction of a new 'state-of-the-art' manufaturing plant at Waterloo, Ontario, for the 'Sunshine-Waterloo Combine' on 23rd July 1930, with manufacturing at the plant commencing operations on 8th January 1931.
Booklet includes a description and specification of the machine, unloading instructions (for delivery), detailed assembly instructions, instructions on starting the engine and operating the machine. Also included is a lubrication chart and instructions on the care and maintenance of the machine and how to undertake in-service adjustements of the mechanism. There are several line drawings of the overall machine and major sub-assemblies with clearly lablled names of key components.
The "Sunshine-Waterloo" Auto Header, also known as the "W" Type Auto Header, was made in three models:
"WA" Type - Designed for the Australian market, fitted with 6 bushel grain bin, 2 bagging shoots, and bagging platform with room for 12-14 full unsewn three bushel bags.
"WB" Type - Designed for the Candian and U.S.A. markets, with 50 bushel grain bin or tank and 'high-speed' unloading elevator suitable for 'bulk handling' of grain.
"WT" Type - Designed for the Argentine market, with bagging shoots and tipping platform to allow full sewn bags of grain to be discharged onto the ground in small batches of 5-6 bags.
A typescript label on the front cover indicates that this copy of the manual was the property of Mr L.J. Baglin, of the Service Department at the Sunshine Harvester Works, during the Masey-Ferguson period (post 1958). There are handwritten annotations on the back page (possibly made by Mr Baglin), which refer to the page numbers for making specific adjustments of components that perhaps regularly caused problems.

Lindsay John Baglin (1902-1967) was a machinery 'expert' employed in the Sunshine Harvester Works Service Department, who joined the firm in the 1920s. He developed a particular expertise in the operation and maintenance of auto headers and was sent by the firm to Canada and Argentina for 12 months during 1929-30, supporting the company's ultimately unsuccessful efforts to establish a factory at Waterloo, Ontario, to manufacture Sunshine auto headers for North and South American markets. When H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd were awarded the first of a series a large contracts by the British Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries to send Sunshine-built farm machinery and implements to the United Kingdom to support their 'Grow-More-Food' Campaign, he was again called on as an 'expert' making an extended visit to the United Kingdom lasting almost two years, during which he experienced first-hand some challenging times, including living through the 8-month long German bombing campaign known as 'The Blitz'. -
