Officer's mess jacket, which was worn by Robert McKeeman Oakley, an officer in the Victorian Artillery Garrison from 1892-1901, and in the Australian Garrison Artillery from 1901. There are no identifying maker's marks.
Physical Description
Black jacket with pointed fronts, red stand collar and cuffs. Upper edge of collar decorated with gold artillery pattern lace that extends down the fronts and lower edge of the jacket forming bull's eyes at the centre back. Lower edge of collar trimmed with narrow gold braid. Round gold cord shoulder cords of artillery pattern, each with an Artillery button. Left front edge has a row of decorative gilt studs although jacket fastens with brass hooks and eyes. Pointed cuffs edged with heavy gold braid. Lined with red silk
