Summary
Black and white silver gelatin photograph of the Kodak Australasia factory in Abbotsford, Victoria, 1948.
This photograph shows the back entrance of Yarra Grange cottage, also known as 'the Cottage' or 'the old Cottage'. A tree is situated in the foreground, obscuring a clear view of the building.
Yarra Grange was the original home of Thomas Baker, founder of the Austral Plate Company which was the precursor of Kodak Australasia. The building to the left of the cottage is part of the Powder and Solution Department. This was the forerunner of the Photochemical Department at the Coburg factory site, located in Building 16 in the late 1960s. The Powder and Solution Department was managed by Pearl Cleaver. She later moved to another Kodak manufacturing site located at the old Barnes Honey factory at Burnley, which was later managed by Len Wells.
Kodak manufactured and distributed a wide range of photographic products to Australasia, such as film, paper, chemicals, cameras and miscellaneous equipment. Its client base included amateur and professional photographers, as well as specialist medical and graphic art professionals who used photography, x-ray and other imaging techniques.
This photograph is part of the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005, when the Melbourne manufacturing plant at Coburg closed down.
