Summary

The Thala Dan at sea, photographed by Hope Black (née Macpherson), December, 1959.
The Thala Dan was a Danish built cargo ship designed to navigate challenging Antarctic waters. The cargo hold was large enough to transport aircraft that was used to survey and map the area.
This slide forms part of a much larger collection of images from the life and career of Hope Black (née Macpherson). They document her famous research trips to Macquarie Island as part of the first team of women permitted to research in the Antarctic. Other images document her earlier expeditions around Australia and her wedding in 1965, which under the Marriage Bar at the time required her to resign from her position at the peak of her career. Finally a number of images capture her latter career as a science teacher.
