It is one of a group of photographs probably taken by American folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard while she was studying children's games and playlore in Australia under a Fulbright research grant,1954-1955. Her photographs and research have become part of the Australian Children's Folklore Collection at Museum Victoria - part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.

Photo shows a girl balancing on one leg, playing hopscotch. She is balanced in the middle of the rounds pattern. She has short hair and is wearing a summer dress and cardigan. The hopscotch pattern is drawn on the sealed surface of a school playground. The brick wall of the building is visible in the background.
