Summary
Published by Hargreen Publishing Company in 1992, 'A Bank for the People' provides a comprehensive history of the State Savings Bank of Victoria (SSB). The authors, Robert Murray and Kate White, were initially commissioned by the SSB to write the book to commemorate the bank's 150th anniversary, but the collapse of the SSB's subsidiary bank Tricontinental and the subsequent sale of SSB to the Commonwealth Bank in 1990, meant this great achievement was not realised. The book was completed nevertheless, and published in what would have been the SSB's sesqui-centenary year.
This edition belonged to (Harold) Keith Morter, who started working for the bank in 1942 at the age of 15, and apart from a two year posting with the RAAF during World War II (1944-1946) was employed by the bank until his retirement in the late 1980s.
