Summary

Copy of a medal of Giovanni Ludovico Toscano in two halves. The original medal was made Lysippus the Younger before 1484. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal, acquired by the British Museum from the collection of George III (Reg. G3,IP.12) , was exhibited in the King's Library in 1881 and is No. 62 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s.

Giovanni Alvise Toscani ( Milan , c.1440 - Rome , 1478 ) was an Italian jurist , humanist and poet. The artist, Lysippus the Younger (or Junior), who worked in Rome during the reign of Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484) is known only by this pseudonym.
