Summary

Copy of a medal of an unknown woman. The original medal, by Giovani Maria Pomedello, was made in about 1510. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal from the collection of George III (Reg: G3,IP.799) was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881 and is No. 83 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The original medal is cast bronze, this electrotype is copper plated and toned.

Bust of lady facing left her hair partly confined in a net, she wears a loose robe over chemise and a pearl necklace; around, F . B . ET . LONGIVS . VIVAT . SERVATA . FIDE .

Reverse Description

Bearded nude figure kneeling facing left holding on his head a fruit basket; behind him Cupid, standing on a globe marked ASO, facing front holding bow in left hand and with quiver over shoulder, he is reaching for the basket with right hand; in field to left a caduceus; at right a vine broken but re-growing; around, IOANNES MARIA . POMEDELLVS . VERONESIS . F .
