Summary

Copy of a medal of Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle. The original medal, by Lione Lioni, was made in about 1549. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal, acquired by the British Museum (Reg. M.175) , was exhibited in the King's Library in 1881 and is No. 99 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s.

"Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, b. at Omans near Besancon in 1517, his father being at that time chancellor to Charles V; bishop of Arras, 1540; took part in the diets of Worms and Ratisbon; negotiated the alliance between Charles V and Henry VIII of England which resulted in the marriage of Philip and Mary. He was the chief adviser of Margaret of Parma, the regent of the Netherlands, and took part in the rigorous measures which drove the United Provinces to revolt; card., 1561; archbp. of Besancon, 1581; d. same year.
