Summary

Copy of a medal of Antonio de Leyva. The original medal, by an unknown artist, was made in about 1530. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal from the collection of George III (British Museum Reg: G3,IP.559) was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881 and is No. 283 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The original medal is cast bronze the electrotype copper plated and toned.

Antonio de Leyva was "A distinguished general in the service of Charles V. He was a native of Navarre and of obscure birth. He first served in Naples, 1502, under Gonsalvo de Cordova the 'Great Captain.' He distinguished himself greatly at the battle of Eavenna, 1512. He was in 1533 made Captain-General of the Imperial and Burgundian troops; in 1535 he accompanied Charles V into Africa, and died the following year." King's Library Catalogue, 1881, p.75
