Summary

Copy of a medal of Faustina Romana (or of Rome). The original medal, attributed to Antonio Abondi, was made in about 1555. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881 and is No. 302 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The original medal is cast lead the electrotype copper plated and toned.

Obverse Description

Bust of Faustina facing left in gown and cloak wearing a jewel suspended from a row of pearls, an ear-ring, and with her hair braided and adorned with a diadem and a net. FAVSTINA RO . O . P. (Roma Optima Pulcherrima?)

Reverse Description

Leda and the swan on a rock; around, SI IOVI . QVID HOMINI
