Summary

Copy of a medal depicting a young Roman Emperor known as Caracalla (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Pius, born 188, Emperor 196-217). The original medal is attributed to the artist Giovanni Boldu was cast in 1466. This two piece electrotype copy was made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. This electrotype was not part of the British Museum's King's Gallery Exhibition of 1881. It's acquisition by the National Gallery of Victoria and thus Museum Victoria is yet to be traced. The electrotype is taken from the British Museum original Reg: 1881,0704.6 which is cast bronze. This electrotype in copper coated and toned.

Reverse Description

The artist (Boldù) seated at left head in hands, faces the Genius of Death, a skull between them; around above, . IO . SON . FINE .; below, the date, . M . CCCC . LXVI .
