World War I-era sympathy card bound with string. The card may relate to the deaths of either William Nairn or his cousin Alexander Nairn, both of whom were killed in World War I. Alexander was killed first, in Egypt in December 1916, and the card may be signed by his aunt, Mary Nairn. She was herself bereaved in less than two years when William was killed in France in July 1918.
Physical Description
Card comprising heavy brown paper cover and off-white inside page, folded in half to form eight leaves, secured with black wool thread. Cover has black border around, flags of Great Britain and Australia (red ensign) and words 'With Sincere Sympathy'. Text on both inside pages, largely printed, with line for personal inscription, completed in hand-writing 'M. Nairn'. The back cover the the card is blank.
