Ventile parka designed by ANARE for use in the Antarctic and manufactured by the Commonwealth Government Clothing Factory. It is part of a field suit worn in Antarctica around 1953. They are part of Museum Victoria's collection of artefacts from the post-war era of scientific exploration of Antarctica.
Physical Description
Olive-green, loose-fitting, pull-over style parka. Features a hood that covers the neck and shoulders. A cream, cotton-weave drawstring emerges through two metal eyelets under the chin area. There is a wide pocket across the chest area. The pocket flap is buttoned down by a single, small round, brown leather plaited button. Underneath this flap is a brass coloured metal zip. A toggle consisting of a brown leather thong and flat brown leather, round button is attached to the zip tab. Beneath each armpit is a brass-coloured metal zip with a toggle attached. Underneath the chest pocket is a large hand-warmer pocket with pocket flaps either side. Each pocket flap features a single round, brown leather plaited button. Beneath each flap is a brass coloured metal zipper with toggle attached to the tab. At the bottom of the parka is a cream- coloured, flat, cotton-weave drawstring extending through two brass metal eyelets. This is a long sleeved parka and its length extends to the thigh area. The stitching throughout is in light green cotton.
