Summary
Linen tablecloth made by donor's grandmother-in-law, Miss Alice Billingham, circa 1907. It was awarded a second class diploma for art needlework at the First Australian Exhibition of Women's Work, held at the (Royal) Exhibition Building, Melbourne in 1907.
The exhibition had three key aims: celebration of educational and workplace advances for women, unification across class boundaries and reinforcing an emerging Australian identity. While it included competitive and non-competitive exhibits in areas such as teaching, nursing and physical culture, many exhibits related to 'traditional' women's work and the activities of the middle classes including fine arts, applied arts, photography, horticulture, literary, music and elocution, needlework, cookery and laundry.
