The $1 coin was released on 5 October 2023, and the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) released 3.5 million $1 coins with the new monarch effigy on 7 Dec 2023, this commemorative card by Max Stern & Co was released on 18 December 2023. Other denominations will be progressively released by the Royal Australian Mint from 2024, based on bank demand. As yet the RAM has not released an official commemorative edition of the $1 coin with the new effigy. On 21 May 2024 the RAM released two sets of 6 coins in circulation (both proof and uncirculated) featuring the new monarch portrait.

Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, and the new monarch, King Charles' coronation was on 6 May 2023. For 70 years, since 1953, Australian coins had a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The King appears on the coin without a crown, a personal choice that follows other monarchs. As is tradition, he faces in the opposite direction (to the left) from his predecessor and mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

This commemorative card is the first ever released by Max Stern & Co., a prominent and well respected Melbourne based vendor of coins & stamps since 1950. 1000 2023 King Charles cards were produced, and all sold out within 48 hours. Coin Sales Manager, Barry Seigel said of the release, 'Customers had been asking for any special releases with the new King effigy at the shop, they had been waiting for an official release from the Royal Australian Mint.'
In lieu of an official commemorative edition, and with the release of the $1 coin, they decided to make their own. Barry said, 'Collectors love packaging, and it becomes a keepsake'. The cards were printed off site but were hand made in house. Using rolls of coins acquired from the Royal Australian Mint, they heat sealed them to the cards with a special machine.
Max Stern partnered with CertiEye for authentication using as QR code on the card.
