Summary

This first day cover was issued by Australia Post in 1978 to celebrate the Australian Racing Industry, particularly horses that had won the Melbourne Cup. One of these was the race horse Phar Lap, who won the race in 1930.

All four stamps were designed by Melbourne artist Brian Clinton.

This cover was stamped in Brisbane in Queensland.

Physical Description

This first day cover consists of a rectangular white paper envelope with four different priced postage stamps attached on right side of envelope. All four stamps feature race horses who have won the Melbourne Cup. Each of the stamps also has a different price and the name of the horse printed on it. On left front side of envelope a pink jockey cap and an orange riding crop have been printed with black ink printed text around it. Reverse of envelope has printed section for sender's name, address and postcode printed on pre-gummed flap. Printed in the lower left of envelope is designers name and cover number. Price of envelope written in pencil at lower right.
