May Day badge promoting national independence and socialism, Australia, circa 1970. May Day, the1st of May, is International Workers' Day, It is a celebration of working classes and labour. In Australia, it is usually celebrated by a march on the Sunday closest to the1st May, although Labour Day is celebrated on a different date with a public holiday. Badge made by AW Patrick, North Fitzroy, Victoria.
Part of collection of badges collected by Jim Cooper, a veteran member of the Building Workers' Industrial Union (NSW Branch) and Union and political activist before his death in 1984. His daughter passed the badges on to Alf Zeeno, ex-secretary of the BWIU, with a request that they be donated to the museum.
Physical Description
Round red badge with the words 'May Day/ National Independence and Socialism' written in black. Back is gold-coloured with a silver-coloured pin attached.
