Summary
Badge 'Land Rights Now' made circa 1970s. It was part of collection of buttons assembled by Mr Watson while active in left-wing politics at University of Melbourne 1979 - 86.
Aboriginal Land rights became a prominent issue the 1970s. In 1970 the return of 586 acres at Framlingham Reserve, Victoria, to Aboriginal ownership became the first Aboriginal land rights victory in Australia. Building on this victory the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission was established in 1973 and in 1976 the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 was the first time 'traditional Aboriginal owners were recognised and given land rights under Australian law.
