Summary
Badge, alternatively known as button, made by Patrick Bros Melbourne.
The slogan printed on the badge, 'Put Australia First Vote ALP BoB Hawke', indicates that the badge was created for the 1984 federal election campaign. The election came only 17 months after Hawke's strong win against the Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser in 1983. In 1984, Hawke did not experience the second strong win he had anticipated. Labor suffered a two percent swing against it and its majority dropped from 25 to 16 seats. The badge is part of a collection of badges assembled by the donor while active in left-wing politics at the University of Melbourne, circa 1979-1986.
Physical Description
Circular button of printed plastic on tin plate with a metal pin and clasp on the reverse. The front has a colour photograph of Bob Hawke on an off-white background, with printed text above and below photograph around the badge margin.
