Summary

'I Will Pay my Fare to a Tram Conductor Only' badge, alternatively known as a button, made by Badge-A-Minit, 1989. This badge was produced by supporters of Melbourne tram conductors who went on strike from December 1989 to January 1990 when the Victorian state Minister of Transport, Jim Kennan, attempted to abolish conductors and replace them with a 'scratch' ticketing system. Many community groups voiced their protest over the introduction of 'scratch' tickets including the disabled and the aged. The Australian Tramways and Motor Omnibus Employees Association, Victorian Branch, represented the striking workers. Tram conductors have never been re-instated on Melbourne's trams in precisely the role they performed previously.
