Summary

Medal awarded by the Wimmera District Pastoral & Agricultural Society to J. Best in 1873 as first prize for 'Colonial White Wine'. The obverse of the medal shows a horse, bull and sheep with farming hand tools and a wheat-sheaf. Joseph Best was a pioneer of Great Western wines.

"The Irvine Wine Collection was acquired by Museum Victoria in 1989. It represents the history of the Great Western Vineyard and the achievements of Hans William Henry Irvine, vigneron and politician, from 1888 until 1922. A silver medal (46 mm diameter) struck from dies engraved by Julius Hogarth.It features a horse, bull and sheep with no attempt at scale p[lus farming hand-tools and a wheat-sheaf.The reverse gives details of the prize within a circular wreath of wheat and grapes.
