Notebook, entitled "'Cook's Excursion or An Evening With The Chinese".
It contains the hand written readings used to accompany the showing of a long series of hand painted slides of China. Used in magic lantern presentations the stated object was "to illustrate the scenery, customs, arts, manufactures, religious ceremonies and political institutions" of China and its people.
This lantern reading is part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
Physical Description
A notebook of lined paper. Worn black card covers. Contains 78 pages of hand written notes. At back of book a list of names and monies (owed/paid?) for 'Season 1878'. The notes are grouped under the headings for 40 slides.
