Summary
Incomplete set of 47 painted slides. The set was used in magic lantern lectures to 'illustrate the scenery, customs, arts, manufactures, religious ceremonies and political institutions' of China and its people.
The set is accompanied by a note book of descriptive hand written notes, grouped under the headings for 40 slides. Relevant slides would be shown at appropriate times during the lecture presentation.
These lantern slides are part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.

Maps, views of cities, country, religious and secular architecture, as well as domestic interiors and people at work 'illustrate the scenery, customs, arts, manufactures, religious ceremonies and political institutions' of China and its people.
Physical Description
Each slide is of the standard 3.25 inch size. The majority contain circular hand coloured images. Two images are rectangular.
