Summary

Record of Service book issued in accordance with Section 146 of the Defence Acts 1903-1910, to Alfred George Findley (sic) Galbraith, training area 58A Moonee Ponds. This service book covers the period 1911-1913. It includes personal information including the year Galbraith was born (1895), his religion (Presbyterian), his occupation (Electric fitter), his height (5' 1 1/2" in March 1911, 5' 9" in Jan 1913) and his next-of-kin details.

Galbraith first registered for military training on 31 January 1911. He started training in the Senior Cadets and when he reached 18 trained with the Citizen Force. Galbraith signed up for active duty on 15 July 1915, and was killed in action in France on 15 July 1916.

The Record of Service book promotes patriotism and good conduct; in the section titled 'Hints to Young Soldiers' is states (in italics) that 'Criminals and Bad Characters are not permitted to serve in the Cadets or Citizen Forces'. It goes on to state 'it should, therefore, be a source of pride to you, that you have been selected for training in the highest national duty--the defence of your country.'

Printed hard back book with cloth cover. A printed label has been affixed to the front cover. There are sections inside which have been filled in with personal details and notes on the training undertaken.
