Summary
Sample of the wrought iron armour plate from the aft turret (one of two turrets) of the HMAS Cerberus warship, cut using oxyacetylene equipment. This sample is a section cut from a larger test block that was cut to estimate how much gas would be required for cutting up the vessel. The roughness of the cut in this sample is due to the poor quality of the air.
The HMVS (Her Majesty's Victorian Ship) was built in 1870 and used by the Victorian Naval Forces from 1871 until she was scrapped in 1924, forming a breakwater in Half Moon Bay. She was renamed HMAS Cerberus in 1911 and HMAS Platypus II in 1921.
