Summary
CANVAS STRETCHER FOUND IN NORTH ENGINE ROOM (NER Z4), SPOTSWOOD.
The context of the recommendation and subsequent action to acquire a stretcher appears to have been a serious accident that occurred in February 1917, when a PS worker was overcome by gas in one of the straining wells and several workers who went to his aid also collapsed and were hospitalised. Bravery awards were issued to several of the workers after this event, which was the first serious incident with gas in the wells reported. Following this there was a series of further more minor incidents with gas over the following few years before the introduction of mechanical ventilation fans below ground seems to have reduced the problem from the mid 1920s onwards.
