Summary
Memory unit of the Control Data 3200 Computer System, attaches to the CPU module. Used at Monash University in the 1960s, superseding the Sirius computer. Made by Control Data Corporation in the United States Of America in the early 1960s.
The unit was made up of two memory modules. The memory was ferrite core made up of a large number of small circular magnetic toroids or 'doughnuts'; each 'doughnut' was made on a medicinal pill making machine. The exterior appearance of the unit. especially the side panels of brushed aluminium and blue glass, shows the influence of Scandinavian design because many engineers in the Minneapolis area in the 1960s were of Scandinavian origin.
Physical Description
Cabinet with grey hinged doors on front. Each side of cabinet fitted with two full sized glass doors.
