The kit bag belonged to Corporal William Henry Dean. Dean was a 36-year-old bricklayer from Auburn, Victorian, and was married to Margaret Ellen, 3 Freeman Street, Auburn, Victoria, when he enlisted on 23 December 1915. He embarked Melbourne, 27 May 1916, on the HMAT Ascanius. He was discharged on 13 March 1917 due to medical incapacity - bronchial catarrh.

The kit bag and a letter were donated by his daughter in 1986.

Physical Description

Rectangular kit bag of medium weight white canvas. Top edge folded down 35mm and has 4 hand stitched eyelets. The eyelets are only on the outside of the folded down edge and they are positioned so that when bag is layed flat there is one eyelet front and back at each side. Inscription on one side of the bag. The text is printed on the bag so that the first line is closest to the closed end of the bag.
