Summary
Volume one of the diary of Sergeant Major Gilbert Payne Mulcahy, 6th Australian Infantry Brigade Headquarters. The diary covers the period 8 May 1915 to 19 March 1917. This volume includes details of a submarine attack on the way between Alexandria to Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, on 2 September 1915; and some graphic descriptions of fighting on the Somme from July 1916 - January 1917. It includes a ribbon from the RMS 'Transylvania' in side pocket.
Sergeant Gilbert Payne Mulcahy enlisted on 15 February 1915. He was awarded a meritorious service medal circa 18 October 1916, and returned to Australia on 9 March 1919.
