Summary
1:8 scale working model of a 1909 design Bryan Brothers open-crank double-reduction-geared multi-blade metal windmill, accompanied by a corrugated-iron tank on a stand. The windmill and tank models sit on a portable wooden base holding a reservoir for the water used when operating. Model commissioned by Scienceworks about 1991 and made by Vic Middleton of Cororooke, near Colac, being completed in 1993. Base has a level gauge at each end and three adjustment screws.
The model was based on a windmill that had been standing near the Middleton's farm for the previous 80 years. It was one of the largest windmills Bryan Bros made, having a wheel diameter of 16 feet (4.8 metres). This type of windmill was designed to pump water from deep bores over long distances to great height. Vic Middleton made patterns for all cast parts and cast them from scrap metal. The model is an exact replica, even to the dimensions of each bolt hole, thickness of metal and links of chains. It was designed to be operated as an outdoor working model with appropriate supervision, using natural wind to turn the sail wheel.
