Keying Relay made by Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd for a radio transmitter, circa 1914.
The relay is a safety device isolates the operator's morse key from the high voltage needed to operate the transmitter. The hand operated morse key switches the current through the coils on and off; activating the armature of the relay, thereby switching the high voltage (safely) to the transmitter.
Physical Description
Two solenoid coils mounted on wooden base with adjustable armature mechanism and terminals. Every major component has a letter on it.
Significance
The equipment is typical of early shipboard radio in the period prior to the First World War (1914 - 1918); it is rare.
