Significance
The 1 Pice denomination was the first struck by the New Calcutta Mint when it opened in 1829. This coin was part of a second issue of that denomination which was begun in 1831. The coins of this issue have a smaller diameter and are much better struck. In October 1831 a further evolution of the copper coinage from Calcutta appeared employing English and discontinuing reference to the old Emperor.
