Significance
This coin and it's associated 1 Pie piece marked a change in EIC attitude to its coinage in Bengal. For the first time no reference is made to the Mughal Emperor and the denomination appears in English. The issue was authorised under Regulation III of 18 October 1831 with the coins being legal tender for fractions of a rupee and current throughout Bengal. The coins were struck at the New Calcutta Mint and bear the crescent mint mark.
