Other Details: A large copper coloured aluminium medal issued in 1978 to commemorate the Centenary of the Shire of Narracan. Narracan is located in Gippsland, east of Melbourne, 13km south-west of Moe. The Narracan Shire included the gold-mining town of Walhalla and the coal-mining centre of Yallourn. Gold rushes were significant in the early development of the Shire. As well as Walhalla itself, gold rushes occured in the surrounding areas of Tanjil, Jordan River, Donnelly's Creek and Aberfeldy. At Coopers Creek copper mining also developed. On 20 September 1878 the Narracan Shire was gazetted, stretching from the Moe River a little beyond Yarragon to the existing Rosedale Shire boundary. Industries in the Narracan area today include include agriculture, timber production, mining and manufacturing.

A large copper coloured aluminium medal issued in 1978 to commemorate the Centenary of the Shire of Narracan featuring on the obverse, in front of British Royal Arms, two crossed shields - the left shield, overlapping the right, has a Lyre-bird standing right and a ferntree; the right has a tree and plough; below, 1978; around on wide rim in the form of a belt, SHIRE OF NARRACAN. And on the reverse at centre within a broad rim a simple map of the Shire picked out by small relief formations over which, SHIRE OF / NARRACAN; to left in plain field, W'GUL, to right, MOE. Around within broad rim, COMMEMORATING 100 YEARS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT . 1878 - 1978 . Below in small letters the mint name, STOKES MELB. It's edge is plain, with mount and ring attached at 12

Significance
