Significance

Although this coin bears the date 1950, it could have been struck any time from that year up until 1952. On 1 January 1951 the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya ceased to exist. It was replaced by the new Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya and British Borneo on 1 January 1952 but during the interim the old Board name and date 1950 was continued on all coins produced. Then the death of George VI further delayed reference to the new Board with the urgent need for new obverses for Elizabeth II, so again all production during 1952 was of the 1950 design. It was not until the 1953 issue with the new obverse of Elizabeth II till reference to the new Board appears on the reverse of the coins; in that year they began to bear the legend MALAYA AND BRITISH BORNEO.
