Summary

Medal for the Centenary of Healesville, Victoria, 1964-1964.
Mint: K.G.Luke.
Medal manufactured for distribution to residents of Healesville on the occasion of the town's centenary. It features Richard Heales, after whom the city is named. Heales was born in London in 1821 and migrated to Victoria in early 1842. He was a leading temperance campaigner and politician, arguing for land reform and a universal education system. He was well respected for his efforts, and when he died from tuberculosis at the age of 42 there was a public outpouring of grief. The Victorian parliament, in which he had sat, named Healesville in his honour and gave his widow 3,000 pounds to support their six sons and two daughters.
