Part of a large photographic collection of glass plate and film negatives, photographic prints and photo albums, relating to the development of the electric power supply industry in Victoria, operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) from 1919 to 1993 and various predecessor private and municipal power supply enterprises dating back to the late 1880s.
Description of Content
Technical staff from the State Electricity Commission, dressed in grey dust coats and hard hats, watching tests with the new No.8 Coal Dredger at the Yallourn Open Cut Brown Coal Mine. The German-built chain-bucket type dredger had a capacity to mine 1,750 tons of coal per hour from a sloping coal face up to 100 feet (30 metres) in height.

The No.8 Bucket Chain Coal Dredge depicted was ordered from Germany in 1956, with erection onsite commencing in the later half of 1957. The dredge entered service in mid-1960. -
