Probably struck at Sydney in 1870s. This coin was exhibited by the Sydney mint at the 1879 International Exhibition. It was acquired by Dr Howat at the closure of the mint in 1926 and later that year donated to the National Gallery of Victoria numismatic collection.
Physical Description
A proof gold coin (21.5 mm diameter with milled edge) featuring a head of Queen Victoria facing left and wearing a wreath of banksia with the date 1857 below. The reverse features the word AUSTRALIA below a royal crown within a wreath of laurel and with the words SYDNEY MINT above and ONE SOVEREIGN below.
