Summary
Note: This image includes a derogatory depiction of a First Nations person. Such depictions are not condoned by Museums Victoria which considers them to be racist. Historical distance and context do not excuse or erase this fact.
Photographic negative of a Volkswagen Float, No.55 watched on by crowds of people at the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets, part of the Moomba Parade, Melbourne, Victoria, March, 1958. The rectangular box float advertises the success of the Volkswagen as the winner of the round Australia 'Mobilgas Economy Run' ahead of a Volkswagen 'beetle' rally car. On top of the float is a large map of Australia painted on a sign, showing the route of the 'Mobilgas' trial, while on the side of the float is painted the slogan 'Volkswagen - the family car'. There is a man atop the float wearing 'black face' and dressed to represent a First Peoples man, and is deeply racist.
